Cosmetic Fillers: Juvéderm® and Restylane®

Cosmetic Procedures

What are cosmetic fillers?

Cosmetic fillers, including Juvéderm® and Restylane® products, are fast, highly effective ways to reduce signs of aging and to address other skin concerns. Dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid in the form of injectable gel to seemingly erase facial lines, plump lips, smooth out chin creases, and restore volume to cheeks. Injections performed by one of our highly qualified providers can produce amazing, natural-looking results in under an hour. The process typically requires minimal down time.

What is the difference between Juvéderm® and Restylane®?

Restylane® is often used for moderate or severe lines because the product is more textured. Juvéderm products are smoother and can treat light-to-moderate lines, augment the chin, and add volume to sagging jawlines. Our providers can help pick the right product based on the patient’s goals and facial structure.

Who is a good candidate for cosmetic fillers?

An ideal candidate would be a non-smoker in good physical health with no known allergies to the product ingredients. Patients should have realistic expectations for the results and be committed to good skin care.

What should I expect during the treatment?

The area to be treated will be cleaned and numbed before your doctor injects the hyaluronic acid, a natural substance already found in high concentration in skin tissue and connective tissue. In many cases, results will be noticeable immediately. Some patients may experience minor pain and bruising at the injection site, but that tends to resolve quickly. It can take up to two weeks to see the full results because the treatments need to fully integrate into the tissue.

How long will the results of a cosmetic filler last?

Most results last six to 12 months. Juvéderm® products typically last a few months longer with some procedures lasting up to two years.

Are there side effects?

Cosmetic fillers are considered low-risk procedures that may have relatively minor side effects, including swelling, redness, and bruising for just a few days following the procedure. In rare cases, a patient may experience more side effects, such as allergic reaction or hyperpigmentation.

In very rare cases, both Juvéderm® and Restylane® can cause more serious compilations. Both can cause hyperpigmentation, infection, or tissue death (necrosis). Follow-up treatment may be needed to address these issues. Allergic reactions are also rare, but can be serious. Your Cizik Eye Clinic provider will discuss additional side effects with you and answer any of your questions before the procedure.
